No Notion of Person

Yutang Lin

In the ″Diamond Sutra″ there is mentioned: no notion of self, no notion of person, no notion of sentient being, and no notion of living being. In other words, no concept of ″self″, no concept of ″person″, no concept of ″sentient being″, and no concept of ″living being″. With further understanding, it means, no longer being engulfed and deluded by these concepts, but instead being able to merge into real experiences; and real experiences are ever evolving and cannot be held onto.

No ″self″ is the fundamental teaching of Dharma, and this topic is often touched upon in Buddhist treatises. No ″person″, no concept of ″person″, is seldom mentioned in Dharma discourses. In fact, once no ″self″ is comprehended, then all others also have no ″self″ by themselves; and hence, we say, no ″person″. Thus, it follows that, no ″sentient being″ and no ″living being″. All these are merely concepts constructed in human minds, and they have no inherent connection with the reality they are referring to.

In actual Dharma practices and activities, so-called ″no concept of person″ amounts to renouncing any and all pre-established views about others. And then simply, based on the compassionate mind as taught in the Dharma, to interact equally with all sentient beings. If one could attain this, only then will one experience the ultimate peace and tranquility.
