As Matters Arise

Yutang Lin

As matters arise
Ordinarily people will immediately take it as good or bad
And then they will become happy or worried with feelings up and down
In fact personal views are limited
The evolution and winding hither and thither of events
And their eventual outcomes and effects
Can hardly be seen through at the present
Not to mention that
How matters are handled and responded to
May have many varieties of attitudes and possible ways to choose from
If one can ponder and select objectively
The immediate results may vary drastically

If a Dharma practitioner can
Not be confined by personal preferences and prejudices
But instead capable of regarding matters as
Opportunities for Dharma practices and building up Dharma connections
Staying away from considerations and feelings of personal gains and losses
Simply ponder on how to handle matters according to Dharma teachings
Either train oneself according to Dharma to benefit others
Or use the opportunity to build Dharma connection and show Dharma teachings
Best would be to find a way congruent to Dharma to benefit all involved

Risings of matters that are not in one's favor
Are exactly opportunities to help one comprehend real situations
Lest one remains deluded in personal fantasies
Seeing matters as they are
Only then can one make wise choices
Recognizing clearly that sufferings accumulated in the world are incessant
Will help one to be not self-confined in a small cell but generate compassion for all
